RESEARCH ASSISTANT
REQUIRED
The Department of Language & Linguistic Science is looking for a full-time
Research Assistant to work on the project "Vernacular Roots: A database of
English dialects". The project is funded by the AHRB. The post offered is
for one year, starting as soon as possible.
This is an ideal position for a linguistics graduate, who has specialised
in Language Variation and Change, who would like to work as part of an
active research team.
The person appointed will be based at York and will be responsible to the
project director. Duties will include:
o Transcription of audio-taped conversations
o Correction, revision, and entry of data into computer files
o Creation of a database of information according to AHDS guidelines
o Data processing, wordlists and concordances
o Data extraction and coding
o Day-to-day maintenance of databases, backup, upkeep and
organisation
The Research Assistant will have university level training in Linguistics,
with preference for postgraduate level. Experience in data transcription
and knowledge of English dialects is essential as well as a good ÔearÕ for
discriminating British dialect features. Experience with database creation
is preferred, as is IT experience and knowledge, particularly in the
construction of websites. Training in the specific software packages in
use by the research team will be provided.
