Following up the message I forwarded from Professor John
Wells about IPA symbols available within MS Word, here are
one or two more hints that he has sent since then to the
'Phonet' newsgroup:
To create a shortcut to IPA symbols:
'With a document open, do Insert / Symbol and select your
symbol from the dropdown menu. Then press Shortcut Key and
choose a keystroke. Do Assign / Close. This assigns that
keystroke to the character you choose. In future, whenever
you do the keystroke, you will get the character.
The keystroke you choose has to be a combination of Ctrl
and/or Alt with another key.'
Prof Wells recommends avoiding choosing Ctrl + (other key),
most of which already have other uses. Most of the Alt +
(other), both 'shifted' an 'unshifted', combinations are
available, as well as most Ctrl + Alt + (other). (But avoid
Ctrl + Alt + 4, as that is apparently assigned to the Euro
symbol ...)
