For any members involved in management of their College/University
creches, I'd be very grateful if you could let me have details of the
nursery salary structures (or perhaps pass this e-mail to the
appropriate person). I know that it will be difficult to get a
direct comparison but any information would be helpful.
Our Nursery is registered for 64 children (aged 10 weeks to 5 years)
and we are open all year except for Bank Holidays, two training days
and the University Christmas closure. Staff work a 36 and a quarter
hour week. All members have an hour lunch break and are not expected
to remain on their premises as we have part-time staff covering.
Leave is as per the University leave so is quite generous compared
with private nurseries and we have the usual pension, sick leave and
maternity leave.
Our Day Care Manager is supernumerary. Her Deputy is also a Section
Leader but has some "free" time to assist the Manager. The Manager
is UCNS Clerical 5, the Deputy is Clerical 3 and the other Section
Leaders (three) are Clerical 2. Peripatetic Nursery Nurses (two) who
sometimes cover for Section Leaders and sometimes cover for Nursery
Nurses/Assistants are paid on Manual 4. Unqualified Nursery
Assistants are paid at Manual 1, progressing to Manual 2 after a
year. Qualified Nursery Nurses (NNEB, BTEC) start at Manual 2 and
progress to Manual 3 after a year. We aim (and have almost achieved)
for all our full-time staff to be qualified.
Our staff (including two part-time cooks) number 25. We are finding
it difficult to recruit high calibre staff and wonder if our salary
scales need revising. The working environment and conditions are
excellent. We will be discussing this at a meeting of our Day Care
Management Group and I'd be extremely grateful for any information
from other Day Care providers.
Many thanks
