Subject: SROC Data Protection Seminar
Colleagues,
With apologies for cross-posting, please find below details of a Data
Protection seminar organised by SROC (the Student Records Officers'
Conference);
SROC Day Conference on 'The Data Protection Act 1998 - issues for student
data'
What are the implications for Academic Registrars, Student Records Officers
and other administrators of student data of the Data Protection Act 1998?
Following the publication of the JISC Data Protection Code of Practice for
the HE and FE sectors in October 2000, SROC is sponsoring a major national
one-day conference to explain and explore the implications of the Act and
the administrative support it will require.
Speakers will include: -
+ A representative from the Data Protection Commissioner's Office who will
explain the changes in the 1998 Act;
+ Andrew Charlesworth, Director of the Information, Law and Technology Unit
at the University of Hull, and author of the JISC Code of Practice;
+ Members of the HEFCE-funded Data Protection Project at Lancaster
University charged with producing guidelines for the HE sector on how to
comply with the Act;
+ There will the opportunity for discussion of the issues raised during
each session;
The session will be introduced by Professor Barry Lee, PVC for Human
Resources and External Affairs at Huddersfield, and will end with a
discussion of the support networks that are available to administrators to
help them with Data Protection issues.
The aims of the day are to: -
+ Brief you about changes to the Act and the Code of Practice;
+ Illustrate and discuss some of the good practice which already exists;
+ Put you in contact with the networks which can help support you.
The day conference will be held at the University of Huddersfield on
Thursday 25 January 2001 from 10.30 a.m. until 3.30 and will cost GBP20,
including a buffet lunch.
For further information and a booking form please reply to this email
stating your name and full postal address. Information will be mailed to
you on 5 January.
If you wish to make a booking directly, please print out, complete and
return the form set out below together with a cheque made payable to the
