At Exeter we are just running a trial that seems to be working well.
Students are required to have their calculators approved by their personal
tutor, who will then attach a tamper proof label. These labels are brightly
coloured, any un-approved calculator should stand out and be confiscated.
The problem with different types of calculators could be tackled with
different coloured labels.

Subject: Use of Calculators in Exams
I would be interested to hear if there are any rules/regs imposed in other
institutions in relation to calculators being used in exams.
At Salford calculators are allowed but students are advised that the
memories of pre-programmable calculators should be cleared.
Obviously not all invigilators have sufficient technical ability to check
that this is done and where lots of students use calculators this can prove
too time consuming to carry out.
It has been said that students in our Engineering Schools have to use very
sophisciated calculators in order to sit the papers and these are
programmable!
What do we do?
