6. Are there any ways in which any of these products or services fail to
meet your expectations or requirements?
Lots, but mainly because HESA do not make the raw data available but only
certain sets of statistics. We have the technology in HEIs to easily
download data into databases or use data warehousing techniques ourselves to
access and analyse the data.
7. Please add any other comments or observations you would like to make
about these statistical products and services
The work done by the HEFCE and HESA (in relation to the HEMS profiles) is
very useful but why not then allow HEIs access to the raw data with
instructions and guidelines about how to 'clean up' the data for certain PIs
rather than actually do the work for us. Invariably there are certain
permutations we want which the published stats don't allow us access to. We
know the data is provided to HESA but it is not always made available in the
electronic versions of the stats. We currently spend lots of time taking
data from the pivot tables in the Planning Plus CDs and reloading them into
our own database for competitor analysis purposes. If we had the raw data
from the returns the job would be a lot simpler. Either that or HESA should
simply make ALL data available in table format, rather than being selective.
We always end up not being able to get hold of the data we need for a
specific purpose.
