Designers at work: the process and practice of pattern design

This study day looks at the complex activity of pattern designing for
commercial production. Case studies from the last 160 years illuminate the
work of a variety of types of designer, from the completely anonymous
mass-market studio hand through to the famous and saleable freelancer. A
contemporary practitioner brings the story up-to-date.
10.00-10.30 Arrival and tea/coffee and biscuits.
10.30 Welcome to MoDA and introduction.
10.45-11.35 The Invisible Designer: printed textiles and the early mass
market. David Greysmith, Design Historian.
11.35-12.25 Lancashire and the World: design for export in the cotton
trade. Freddie Launert, Archivist for Sanderson.
12.25-1.15 Marion Dorn, freelance designer. Dr. Christine
Boydell, Senior Lecturer in Design History at De Montfort University,
Leicester
1.15-2.45 Break for lunch and a chance to look at MoDA's exhibitions.
2.45-3.35 'Practical Design': the Silver Studio 1880-1963.

3.35-4.25 Working Design: the practice today. Pat Etheridge,
freelance textile and wallpaper designer
Fees: Full rate: £27.00. Concessions for seniors, students, registered
disabled people and ES40-holders £20.00.
A sandwich lunch is available at a cost of £6. It needs to be booked in
advance, so please indicate if you would like lunch and include payment for
it with your booking for the study day. Otherwise there are sandwich bars
and restaurants nearby.
