I've just started an experiment with my first year students who are working
on a team project at the moment. I've set up a supporting web site, and an
email discussion list. The web site has gone down well, and the list is
about to start properly.
But my favourite is web-based SMS text messaging. I've collected student
mobile numbers (with their permission) and set myself up so that I can use
my iBook to send them a text message at any time.
Ideally it will be used to tell them of changes of plan, staff illness,
reminders about deadlines etc.
But yesterday I tried it for the first time and sent a test message, then
ran into the studio in time to hear about 20 mobile phones go off at the
same time! A very effective demonstration.
Initial reaction has been good - students think it will be a good way of me
keeping in touch with them. And it's free!
There is software available for Mac and PC to allow you to set up address
books and send messages without using the web, but I've found our firewall
gets in the way.
Just thought I'd share it with you.
