Adrian,
Thanks very much for the WHO weblink which is very interesting and useful. The
reason I asked about the definition is that I am the research fellow on an EPSRC
'design for dementia' project focusing on the external built environment. I
wanted to check that the EU includes cognitive impairments within its definition
as I have found that many references to disability focus almost exclusively on
physical aspects. However, despite the narrow focus of my project (or perhaps
because of?!), I do to a great extent share Kevin Carey's point of view. My hope
is that our eventual design guidelines to improve wayfinding, orientation and
sense of wellbeing of people with dementia while in the external environment
will be of benefit to all others members of society as well.
Thanks again for taking the time to help with my search. It is much appreciated.
