Hi Kim,
I am all in favour of designing toilet facilities to include adults who need
a high degree of personal care. Unfortunately there are very few such
places outside of hospitals.
There is a very good hoist made by Handimove, called the Sure Hands Body
Support, which does not require the wheelchair user to be sitting on a sling
and instead emulates being lifted by large hands, with support around the
rib cage and under the thighs. It gives a very good 90/90 sitting position
and retains much more dignitythatn most slings. It is sold by Moving
Solutions, 18, St Johns Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Notts. NG12 2GW 0115
933 2888. They do a range of free-standing, wall mounted and ceiling mounted
hoists
As for the ceiling needing to be structurally sound, that is tue but you can
get round that by running support struts up the walls to take the overhead
rails directly.
The following is a list of manufacturers of disability equipment such as
plinths etc which I put together when I was advising our local hospital on
fitting a baby change platform into an accessible loo.
Regards,
Vin West, Secretary, Arfon Access Group
