One of our Occupational Physicians wrote to Simon Keightley, Consultant
Opthalmic Surgeon who is Chairman on the Visual Standards Sub Committee, Royal
College of Opthalmologists about this issue.
He states in his response ''.....Stereopsis I am sure plays little part in most
precision jobs involving driving as it really only comes into play when
observing close objects nearer than say arms length. After that distance
monoular vision using other clues I am sure is just as accurate at providing
depth perception rather than true stereopsis. As you rightly say the Keystone
does emphasise the importance of stereopsis but we have done a small survey here
at the College regarding the Keystone machine and it is felt that no real notice
should be taken of the results that this provides. As you say from your
experience crane drivers without stereo vision perform just as well as those
with it and I am sure this bears out our thoughts.''
On this basis we made the decision that stereopsis is not a prerequisite for
passing an FLT/Crane Operator medical.
Hope this is of some help.
