A former student of mine managed H&S for a large manufacturing company and
one of his initiatives was the retention of a chiropractor. Anecdotally,
one of the results was that he was getting more office based staff than
anticipated using the facility. Presumably this was because of the DES work
(we can all make other suggestions as to why this was). The point, however,
is that while it is difficult to predict uptake etc., planning and building
of evaluation into the programme at the outset is essential.
I believe that there has been correspondence on this list already about
evaluation of OH interventions.

Subject: FW: Management of musculoskeletal disorders at work.
Dear members,
Musculoskeletal disorders are consistently one of the highest causes of
sickness absence in the manufacturing environment where I currently work as
company nurse. I am sure many of you also find this a challenging problem
to say the least!. We have been looking into how we can address this issue
with the introduction of support services for our employees e.g.
physiotherapy. Kinetic training and risk assessments are also high on our
agenda. Health education information leaflets/booklets are also available
to our employees giving advice on a whole host of musculoskeletal problems
including 'The Back Book' based on the latest Medical evidence. Perhaps
you have implemented an effective way of tackling this issue with management
in your own workplace situations. Would you be willing to share some of
your ideas, or maybe make a few suggestions to help me? Can any of you
share any experiences of the effectiveness of physiotherapy services that
you may already use for the benefit of your employees?
Regards
Jill Rossiter RGN
