tfpl/isNTO seminar
Scenarios for the knowledge economy:
strategic information skills
Date: Tuesday 6th November 2001
venue: The British Library Conference Centre, The British Library, 96 Euston
Road NW1 2DB
introduction to seminar:
This seminar presents the results of a research project, undertaken on
behalf of isNTO by TFPL, to ascertain the skills requirements of the
information services workforce in the knowledge economy. The research took
the form of scenario planning workshops held in eight public and private
sector organisations. Participants, representing the whole organisation,
developed future scenarios for their organisations and discussed the
information challenges and skills requirements for each scenario.
The focus of the research was on workers, qualified or not, who might find
themselves enlisted in information related roles now or in the future.
The information services workers will need to be flexible, responsive and
capable of working in dispersed teams. They also need to be able to form
information networks and communities within organisations and with their
partner organisations. The research showed that:
* Organisational information and knowledge strategies will become
highly developed
* The customer base for information services will expand to include
internal and external stakeholders
* Information services workers will become responsible for the
management of external and internal information and its integration
* An increasingly virtual and multi disciplinary information team will
be responsible for facilitating the creation and application of knowledge
and information. This team will be dispersed throughout the organisation
and members will be integrated into business units and functions
* The multi-disciplinary teams will include: information specialists,
IT practitioners, subject specialists and 'super users'
* The information workforce will not necessarily be totally internal
to the organisation
* Many information services workers will find themselves working under
non-traditional line managers
