introduction to the course:
The investigative, one-on-one interview is the single most important method
of learning about an organisation's, or individual's, activities,
information systems and needs. Interviewing is an essential part of the
information gathering process, enabling researchers to delve efficiently and
effectively into the individual's knowledge base.
A skilfully managed interview can enable you to take effective briefs from
clients and colleagues and to conduct more efficient external research.
Interviewing skills are absolutely essential for information professionals
who wish to develop core internal consultancy skills.
Experience shows that a modest amount of training in good interviewing
practice can transform interviewing from a potentially difficult and
frightening process into an enjoyable, highly informative and profitable
experience. This course presenter has interviewed thousands of individuals
in a wide range of industry sectors and this one day course covers the basic
skills needed by information professionals for effective investigative
interviewing.
The same 'toolbox' of skills and techniques can apply to all types of
interviews. There are different objectives for different situations and
these need to be embodied in the choice of tools used and the content of the
questions and discussion. There are also differences in interviewing styles
for different types of people (internal/external/senior managers/ peers
etc.). This course will address the skills and techniques and their
appropriate use.
This course will include demonstrations and practical sessions in such key
areas as formulating open questions, probing and taking notes. You will be
sent a questionnaire in advance to help us customise the course as closely
as possible to your requirements.
