Dear colleagues,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Sergey Golunov, I m a candidate of
historical sciences (equivalent to Ph.D. s degree), an Assistant Professor of
Volgograd State University. As well, I m a Deputy Director of the Center for
Eurasian Studies, which specializes mainly in research of modern political and
processes in the Post-Soviet space. The field of my research interests
includes study of new post-Soviet borders with emphasis on cooperation and
especially security issues such as border regime, risks and challenges etc.
For now I carry out research project Russia-Kazakhstan Borderland: Cooperation
and Conflict . The border between Russia and Kazakhstan (I live by the way in
Volgograd region of Russia that has a part of this frontier) is unique: as far
as I know it is the sole example of transparent (and even not delimited)
boundary between the countries associated with Western and Oriental cultures,
Christian and Muslim civilizations. I suppose that it will be interesting to
compare Russia-Kazakhstan and US-Mexican borders as the frontiers, which divide
the countries of different civilizations and which have in many respects
security issues and risks directed mainly northwards. By similar reasons
Russian-Ukrainian and Russian-Belorussian borders seems to be comparable by
some parametres to American-Canadian frontier. Taking into account these
considerations, I m ready to discuss possibilities for cooperation such as
comparative studies of borders and other measures. I would like to study more
fundamentally the theory of border studies but I have very little information
about literature that contains corresponding surveys. Dear colleagues, I d be
very thankful to you for such bibliographical information as well as for
information (maybe proposals) concerning fellowships which could allow me to
conduct joint research work and improve my theoretical knowledge.
Yours sincerely,
Sergey Golunov,
Deputy Director of the Center for Eurasian Studies, Volgograd State
University.
