Hi,
just a note on the volume of list emails (of which this is yet another),
and which might be worrying some members.
1. Most important is to remember that on a new list, there is always a high
volume in the first week or so. This will settle down soon, and I'd expect
there to be regular emails, but not in quite so much volume. So one option
is just to wait and see.
2. Another option is to subscribe to the digest version - i.e. get all the
days emails lumped together in one big email each day. This is most
appropriate if you rarely intend to actually send an email to the list, but
not so good if you want to contribute. Some people like digests, some
don't. You can switch to the digest version by going to the web interface at:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/vle.html
Once in, choose "Join or leave the JISCmail list (or change settings)" and
then under Subscription type, choose "Digest (traditional)"
If this is the first time you've ever done this, you'll have to choose a
password, which will work for all your jiscmail lists.
Using the web interface has lots of advantages - e.g. you can see all the
mailings, order them by date, subject, thread etc. Very useful.
If, having tried to do it yourself first, email me OFF THE LIST, at
[log in to unmask], and I'll set you up for the digest. But please,
try it yourself first.
3. You can also set up your emailer to automatically send all list emails
into a folder, so you can look at them at your leisure. You'll notice the
subject line always starts with [VLES] - you can use this to filter the
emails.
4. You can unsubscribe (though I don't necessarily recommend this!).
Details on how to do this are appended to the end of every list email - if
you look at this, you'll see that you don't send an email to the list
asking to unsubscribe, because all that happens is that it goes to all the
list. You send it to the same address you used to subscribe, i.e.
[log in to unmask]
Hope this all helps - but, most important, the volume will decrease after
the initial excitement (if that's the right word) of a new list.
Incidentally, the list has 180 members, achieved in two days.
Geoff.
