Phew. I've never seen a topic generate so many responses.
I remember this issue being discussed in Belfast quite a bit. While it keeps me
and my boys busy, I think I'm glad that currently all web pages here are done
(or fine-tuned) by our team, so the web sites tend to have a co-ordinated look
with some variations within the site: for our Glass Centre or Construction
Curriculum Centre, for example.
I suspect many FE colleges have their sites co-ordinated by the Marketing Unit,
and quite a few are designed externally, often by the company producing the
prospectus for the college.
I'm independent of Marketing and I.T., as I got into web design while I was
still running the teacher training courses here. Our first and largest web site
is the Staff Intranet, which has all our Quality Assurance material, room and
staff timetables, student information, library catalogue, etc., on-line for
internal access. I try to get the main (dudleycol) web site to look like the
college print material, all produced in-house by our Design Unit.
I don't envy those of you who are trying to rein in colleagues who have been
making web sites for a few years but whose design skills may not be adequate for
the 21st century.
