We did register a few names after one of our students had a .... little
disagreement .... with a tutor and set up a web site through a company in the
States that allows a free domain name. The student used the college name.
Because the web site contained false allegations, we had it closed down, but the
domain name has been retained by the American company who says it's available
for a price.
We were blessed with not a particularly bright choice of domain name, as you can
see below. So, I've picked up the more obvious "dudley.ac.uk".
Now let me tell you a tale about the Campaign for Real Ale, who used to have one
domain name that wasn't entirely sensible, so they changed to an "org.uk".
Unfortunately, a few web sites still hooked into the old address, which until
last month didn't matter.
Last month CAMRA didn't renew the old name. The old address has been snapped up
by an American IPname-parker, it's been offered back to CAMRA for five hundred
dollars, and it's currently routing traffic to a porn site. Persuasive
marketing!!
