[[Apologies for cross-posting to web-support and website-info-mgt]]
Hello everyone,
This is quite software-specific (and hence long), but I would really
appreciate some help having only had minimal experience with Netscape
Enterprise web servers.
The company which does our web hosting runs Netscape Enterprise 3.51 and
via this hosts *lots* (> 550) of kind of virtual servers (all of our Herts
County Council school web sites). Each server is done via a schema similar
to www.schoolname.herts.sch.uk - in the browser this resolves to
www.schoolname.herts.sch.uk/schoolname/ - each school has a different name
and its web site is located in a different folder, hence the trailing
directory (seen in [1]). This is (a) 'ugly' and (b) causes problems with
absolute references beginning here rather than
relative ones like this. We are pushing for an
upgrade to the current version of Netscape (aka IPlanet v4.1), but I am
told that this version *cannot* remove the trailing directory and therefore
will not address the issues mentioned.
Is this true? http://www.iplanet.com/ mentions that each instance of
IPlanet 4.x can operate up to 256 virtual servers[2] (hence we'd need more
than one instance, which isn't a problem) - I find it hard to believe that
a current commerical product which can operate on this scale cannot produce
a 'clean' www.schoolname.herts.sch.uk URL when something like Apache (and
others) can do this (I know 'cos I've done it...). Have I got the wrong end
of the wrong stick or am I correct? There is other documentation which
points to this as well [3].
I'd appreciate any advice and experience anyone has, am happy to summarise
any direct replies (which reminds me, I must summarise answers to an
earlier request...), as this is becoming a major issue for us! I realise
that (probably) not many people on the list are involved in hosting >500
servers (please prove me wrong but I'm not about to start an "actually,
I've got 634" contest...) but any answers or pointers would be invaluable!
Many thanks in advance & thanks for listening...
Ian.
