As part of my consulting project for Austroads in Australia, I am
looking at the safety issues associated with overloaded vehicles. During
the late 1980s I was involved in initial testing of the mobile
Truckalyser device (invented by Rod Vaughan, who sadly passed away in
August). I have some early and very tentative data that suggests a
possible link between overloading and the presence of defective brakes.
If this can be confirmed it may merely indicate that the operator is a
risk-taker with both overloading and roadworthiness since I doubt that
overloading can "cause" brake defects.
Have RTT subscribers any research results available into this and other
safety issues potentially associated with overloaded vehicles?

Michael Paine
