Set to God's Own Country, from The Beautiful Game
Palestine is God's own country
That's what Sharon's lot would have us all believe
Jerusalem is for the Jews
And the Arabs are bad news
It may not look like God's own country
Full of soldiers with their guns and bombs and fear
War-ravaged, and what's more
Bethlehem's where Christ was born
Which brings another claim to God's own country
So there's Christians versus Muslims versus Jews
Though they share the one Father, their heroes and martyrs
Were all hostile cousins, and all buried in the land
Three new generations rebuilding three nations
In one Holy City, that's how it all began
In the Temple courts at night, believers gather
Mid the guns they worship God with psalm and song
A sublime eternal prayer
To the light that's ever there
These tribal wars weren't written in our history
When the Word brought life and light to land and sea
They're not the song the creator sings
Long before the world began
And now America is God's own country
And it's rightwing and Republican and free
It's a Protestant land made by God's perfect hand
At least that's what we're given believe
So the US rule OK, and we call it free trade
As they pollute starve third world economies
Now the Taliban who dominate the Afghans
Took control there when the US asked them in
Armed and trained by the CIA
They're attacking US today.
So we'll bomb the starving poor in their own country
Where the land mines lie deep buried in the sand
Blasting mothers and fathers and children - not martyrs.
For we want Bin Laden and Laden's in Afghanistan
Then we'll build them a nation we can see our face in
And they'll thank us for killing the wicked Taliban
You ask me - where is God's own country?
It's in the faces of the children and the poor
In the love of those who share
In the tears of those who care
What a mess this bloody war's turning out to be
