This part of the world it's winter: I'm currently reading Trevor Joyce's
collected poems, With The First Dream of Fire They Hunt The Cold (New
Writers' Press, Ireland) - it's not very often that a poetry collection
yields such many and various pleasures, sensual, emotional and
intellectual (it's very aptly subtitled "a body of work" - for me the
poems inhabit a wholeness of being, a carnality if you like that
incorporates the intelligence of aesthetic). I'm familiar with some of
Trevor's longer poems - Syzygy, Without Asylum and Trem Neul, and have
seen others in my scattered reading of the www, but this is a chance to
see the whole oevre, and it's really something.
Still mulling over the poetry, so this an in-progress report - but get
out there and buy it. Apart from anything else, it's a beautifully
designed object, fantastic to hold and read.
