the thing about these poessays is that they seem to be only opinions.
which, like prose essays of the type, reach those who agree & don't do much
for those who disagree.
I would want to argue that many poems include aspects of the essay at its
best: a search for meaning, an exploration of possibilities, a
ratiocination. We can probabaly go back further than Pope, but certainly
there the 'poetry' makes itself felt. A lot of Auden? Definitely some of
Olson, whom I've alrady mentioned. Or Howe. From his review of it,
certainly some of Hill's work, throughout his career. Much else...?
