What are lines breaks for anyway? I thought some sort
of quanitification mightn't go a miss any other
suggestions.
they get used in verse to mark out diversions of
groups of feet and seperate stanzas and thus highten
the certain kinds musicality in verse. Or to make out
a number of syllabuls in fixed sylabul metres.
they get used in freer forms to create various iconic
effects like the drowning boat in Mallarme etc
also there is Wordsworths use of it which is creates a
tension in the line. Various areas of line have a
loaded significance and , where a certain reading is
suggested but then enhanced or rebutted by the
appearance by the new line. Also though he plays
around with different types of line ending and leaving
words dangling at the end of lines pushed out by
commas both these devices get used to bring out
various ambiguous readings in the text.
I suppose there is a whole range of poetry that uses
the line break to harrass the language in various
ways, I suppose this is the effect in Prynne. Does
anyone get much from these, i would welcome some
helpful directions as to how to get started with these
poems.
hmmm have I missed anything else, personally these
totem shaped poems called prosessays are set on end
pub thoughts. Then again Baselitz says that his
pictures turned upside down are abstracts, and some
folk believe him.
