I was in a conundrum with this show, in that the people in charge of Internet
access came up with one of the three terminals, and in the end I went redundant
in creating a CD-ROM of the online show catalogue. We also had three
additional terminals for the CD-ROMs, but given the scope of the show, the
disjucture between the online and physical galleries was not as earth-shaking
as one would surmise. Largely, the online and physical audiences for this show
had little overlap, which I thought was a little strange (alsmost like curating
two separate shows), but it seemed to work.
In addition, because none fo the ROM-based works had a contextual physicality
to them, the terminals were not much of an issue in relation to how they were
incorporated into the gallery space, just as long as they were conveniently
placed.
However, one CD, Raivo Kelomees' "TokyoEE", which was about his travels through
the various lines of Tokyo's rail system as a form of time travel, was
installed with one chair at the terminal, and two sofas off to the side, as a
miniature proscenium. I've always been interested in the performative nature
of new media, and as I often saw people seated on the couches watching the
operator, it raised some interesting questions for me that are beyond this
missive.
