Dear Colleagues,
Hideo Okabe was among the first to study the photochemistry and
kinetics of small molecules. His work and his book, "The
Photochemistry of Small Molecules" are parts of the base upon
which many of us have established our research. He has been
a good and true friend as well as a valued colleague.
Hideo's health has not been the best in recent years which
has forced him (unwillingly) to retire from active research.
There are two tributes planned. Bob Huie and Jeff Hudgens
are organizing a session on the photochemistry and kinetics
of small molecules in Hideo Okabe's honor at the Fifth
International Conference on Chemical Kinetics to
be held at NIST, July 16-20, 2001.

We are also collecting letters of appreciation from Hideo's friends,
colleagues and all those who have benefited from and enjoyed his
work. We would like to present them to Hideo in a bound volume at
the conference. We hope his health will allow him to attend. If you
would like to contribute to this, please send your letter to:

In order to bind the volume, we need to have your letter by July 2, 2001.
Please pass this information on to others who might be interested.
