EUROPEAN CONGESS OF SUBTERRANOLOGY
From the 7th to the 9th of September 2001, a European congress of
subterranology and the 24th national congress of the Société Française
d’Etude des Souterrains will be held in France, in Laon and will be
organised by the S.F.E.S. and the Town of Laon.
Laon is situated in the North of France, in the Department of the Aisne, at
140 kilometres to the North-East from Paris.
With 27 000 inhabitants, this main-town behave a rich historic built
heritage: about 80 protected monuments, 5,5 kilometres of ramparts and one
of the most magnificent French cathedral.
The city was built on a top. Her undergrounds was totally under-mined in
many floors: from the first medieval to the medieval ages, different civil
and military workings of the XVI to the XIX century.
About 140 hectares of holes are waited you in the town-centre!
Several visits are projected in the surroundings of Laon, both rich in
undergrounds: troglodytes villages, some of the quarries was working during
the first world war, during the famous Chemin des Dames battle.
