I missed the original question but there were saggars (not
sure about the spelling) in the pottery industry. They
were little spacers/stands used to separate plates etc when
being fired (I think). They were probably ceramic and for
some reason I think they had a wire support in their centre.
There was a saggar maker and then someone who worked
for the saggar maker called a saggar maker's bottom
knocker (honest.) - this was such a grand title that it appeared
on the radio show "What's my line?" (if that was the one where
you had to guess people's occupations).
Not sure what he did though - it could have been knocking the
saggars off the bottom of the fired plates, I suupose.
