'Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must be silent', however, I have
watched these threads develop since Mike's initial comments and although it
appears clear what the problem is concerning NAMHO no one has informed us
why an, alleged, 'proposal' for a merger of PDHMS-NMRS has surfaced. Perhaps
one or more of the two societies 'great and good' would care to enlighten
the 'rank & file'?
Otherwise the resulting discussion, (I note that Peter has in fact
questioned the validity of discussing the matter on the list, for myself I
can't think of a better communication channel) appears at best to be
somewhat premature and is perhaps becoming somewhat alarmist?
That's not to say that some interesting and thought provoking ideas haven't
emerged already, Peter is right in saying that mining history is more than
underground mine exploration, although its 'base' in economic history may
reveal more about his own interests than he realises, unless of course he is
proposing a Marxist analysis for studying the subject! John's suggestions
for training and involvement of the membership could prove a catalyst to
involve a lot of people who are interested in the subject but who are
otherwise reluctant to step forward.
However, before we can make headway surely we particularly need to know why
there seems to be a proposal to amalgamate at least the publications of the
two societies. I can guess but we have the ideal forum to discuss the
reasons, let's use it!
In conclusion, in the immortal words of Mr. Gradrind, "Now, what I want is,
Facts".
