Apologies to those who are not members of either society, but the principle
affects all those interested in mining, and I can think of no other easy way
to discuss this with all those who do have an interest.
I think that there are probably a reasonable number of members of each
organisation who are members primarily to receive these well respected
publications.
What I fear is that a merger will halve the output. Will my collection of
A5 NMRS books stop, or my A4 PDMHS collection? Either way we will lose an
important mining publication. I also think that the membership of any
combined society will not be much greater than either society has at
present. As Owen Baker said, there is no reason to be a member of both, if
it were not for the publications, (and would we get a refund on membership
fees?)
I also don't think that there is any point in complaining that Mike Moore
has not provided enough information. It is not up to him to do so, and he
presumably does not have any more information anyway. I am sure he is airing
his concerns about what he has heard, and we probably now know as much as he
does. It is best that he brings this to our attention, even if nothing comes
of it; and I note that nobody has refuted that discussions have started
about a merger.
Richard Amies, member of both societies.
