As my earlier reply may have gone straight to the sender rather than the
list i will try again.
In the North Pennine and Yorkshire Dales metal mines the terms adit and
level are the same. However the levels usually perform the dual role of
haulage and drainage. Although the two terms are often used interchagablably
in mining records when it came to naming horizontal entrances into mines
"level" is the most common suffix.
In the Halifax coal mines the terms dayhole, dayeye and tailend mine are
used to refer to drift mines. Adits (or soughs) are referred to as a water
loose.
.............but a "mining related compromise", that sound like an
unfortunate incident in the pit baths!
