Keep in mind however that in 1998, I think, midwives who were
independent of the NHS or another medical institution, and worked in a
group practice but were not self-employed, were voted out of the
Independent Midwives Association. The IMA then equated "independent"
with "self-employed". I am now living/working in the States, so am out
of the loop ..... but my guess is there has been no change. I raise this
point as a caveat to gaining a picture of the true number of independent
midwives practicing in the UK.
