Oxford University is to create the world's first internet institute.
The Oxford Internet Institute will carry out research and make policy
recommendations about the internet's effects on society. The goal is to
make the city a world leader in global e-research.
The institute has been funded by a £10 million donation from the Shirley
Foundation - whose founder, Dame Stephanie Shirley, is one of Britain's
richest women - together with public funding totalling £5 million from the
Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The research centre
will be at Balliol College, and is expected to become a focus for
Government policy on internet-related issues.
The institute hopes to attract some of the leading internet experts in the
world and will be offering positions for research staff seconded to Oxford
and post-doctoral staff working in the area.
