Dear Dr Brine,
We at TalNet (code: ZW/P6) have found that our deposit account
statements need to be checked carefully every month.
I have often found errors - mostly duplication of debits on claims by
other libraries, usually due to human error at the BLDSC end rather than
the claiming library's end. Occasionally our identifying request number
hasn't been input correctly. These are quite understandable errors
given that the "banker" function is not automated and the relevant staff
are probably dealing with thousands of claims every day. Perhaps now
that an administrative charge is to be levied on all claims the BLDSC
will have the financial resources to automate? (Or am I living in cloud
cuckoo land...?!?) As it happens, if there are any errors to report, I
have always found the staff at Account Enquiries to be very helpful and
quick at sorting things out.
In any case, even if there are no further errors, I still have to go
through every entry on the statement in order to check the requesting
branch library. TalNet is a joint Bibliographic Services Unit serving
three separate local authorities in NW Wales and we have to keep track
of each county's expenditure on ILLs. Luckily the fund accounting
functionality on TALIS is a great help with this!
Cheers,
Eleri Jones

Subject: BLDSC statements
I would appreciate your comments on how carefully BLDSC statements need
to be
checked. I have checked Lancaster University's statements for August
and
September and have found very few mistakes. It seems that the system
works
well and we probably do not need to continue detailed checking - the
time taken
really is not cost effective. Or is your experience different?
Any replies to: Dr Jenny Brine
