Hi Sharon,
E-journals should be assigned their own ISSNs by the ISSN agency separate
from their print equivalents. This does not always happen as publishers
often produce e-titles without informing the appropriate agency. In these
cases they often publish the e-journal with the incorrect print ISSN.
In cataloguing terms the 022 tag in UKMARC is to be used for the ISSN that
uniquely identifies the journal. This means that only the ISSN for the
e-title should be used - if one is lacking no information is entered. Also,
as the 022 tag is non-repeatable in UKMARC you would not have the option of
repeating this to include both ISSNs (MARC21 does allow this tag to be
repeated but I'm not sure whether it could be used for this purpose). Due
to the lack of e-ISSNs we have been using the 511 tag to record the print
ISSN so that we could utilise this if necessary, but this is not standard
practise.
I hope this is useful.

Subject: ISSNs in Electronic Journals
Hello
Apologies if this topic has been discussed before. We are in the process of
investigating our Electronic Journals and how they can be catalogued
according to standards that exist or practices undertaken within Scottish
Libraries.
I am enquiring whether any other libraries have taken a decision on what do
about including ISSN's in e-journal records. I am aware that the ISSN of a
print journal does not necessarily match that of the e-journal. Is anyone
aware of a resource that lists ISSN's of e-journals? What policies has your
institution decided upon inclusion of paper copy ISSN's in the e-journal
catalogue record?
Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sharron Wilson
