UN: Seven million Afghans are likely to lose life due to hunger
Vienna, Oct 12, IRNA -- United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization
(FAO) declared here Friday that over seven million Afghans are feared to die
of hunger in near future due to severe war conditions in Afghanistan.
According to a UN news release, the extent of hunger threat in Afghanistan
is so high that even the Taliban forces have agreed with the establishment
of Iranian refugee camps inside Afghanistan territory, and look forward to
resumption of international relief aid. According to FAO, before the
U.S.-British attacks on Afghanistan, some 50,000 tons of foodstuff was
imported into Afghanistan per month to meet the Afghans' need for food,
which has now drastically dropped to only 20,000 tons. The UN report adds,
"Despite the emergency situation in Afghanistan, the relief aid caravans are
currently on the way to that country." "Some 40 trucks carrying 1,000 tons
of foodstuff started from Pishavar in Pakistan towards Afghanistan."
According to the United Nations childrens funds (UNICEF), one caravan
comprising seven trucks carrying 40 tons of foodstuff were forwarded this
afternoon from Iran's border towards Herat. The UNICEF report further adds,
"Some 3,300 tons of foodstuff is expected to be transported to Afghanistan
from its neighboring countries within the coming four weeks. MP/NA/AR End
