Generally intrinsic and inherent are synonyms; however the term intrinsic
pertains to the 'essence' of something whereas inherent refers to a
'quality'.
For instance the red spruce may be any red spruce which appears red. A red
spruce may be any species which has been recently killed, and it may be a
Picea engelmanni, or a Picea sitkensis, or a Picea pugens. On the other hand
a true red spruce, P. rubens, has an 'essential' definition arising from
features not like in any other species, ie. native to the New England
states, and is the only spruce that grows south of West Virginia. It is a
species highly susceptible to acid deposition.
"Ordinarily, red spruces reseed quickly and heavily. As the great evergreens
died and opened the canopy of the treetops, the bare forest floors became
bathed in life-giving sunshine. Although an explosion of shrubs and other
new vegetation followed, Vogelmann reported that there are no young spruces
to be seen."
