> Subject: New Guidance on Concrete in Aggressive Ground - BRE Special
> Digest 1
>
> Speakers: Dr. Philip Nixon and Ian Longworth - BRE
>
> Synopsis:
>
> In recent years the thaumasite form of sulfate attack (TSA) has damaged
> concrete in house foundations, floor slabs, highway substructures and
> tunnel linings in the UK. This seminar introduces the new BRE Special
> Digest 1 (SD1) which replaces BRE Digest 363 and aims to combat TSA. Part
> 1 of SD1, addressed at Geotechnical Engineers, gives new guidance on
> ground assessment for concrete, including procedures to allow for the
> presence of pyrite which may oxidise leading to enhanced sulfate levels.
> Parts 2 and 3 of SD1 contain user-friendly Design Guides for the
> specification of concrete for common applications, as well as giving a
> generic procedure for the design of concrete mixes from first principles
> for more unusual situations. The presentation includes:
> * Identification of chemicals in the ground that are potentially
> harmful to concrete and assessment in terms of the new Aggressive Chemical
> Environment for Concrete (ACEC) classification.
> * Specification of concrete for use in aggressive sulfate and acid
> ground conditions, including recommendations for various types of cement
> and aggregates.
> * Specification of additional protective measures, including enhanced
> concrete quality.
> The presentation will conclude with a brief outline of the problems
> currently being experienced in making the transition between the two
> Digests.
> Dr. Philip Nixon, Director of BRE Centre for Concrete Construction
> Philip is a member of the Thaumasite Expert Group. He leads work on
> durability and performance of concrete, cement and aggregates. In recent
> years he has overseen investigation of TSA and development of guidance to
> combat it in the Expert Group Report and the Special Digest.
> Ian Longworth, Associate Director of BRE Centre for Ground Engineering and
> Construction
> Ian is responsible for research on buildings affected by unstable ground
> and concrete subject to aggressive ground conditions. He was a technical
> adviser to the UK Government's Thaumasite Expert Group and joint editor of
> its Report. He is technical editor of the Special Digest.
> SPECIAL OFFER: Copies of BRE Special Digest 1 which normally retails at
> £60 + £6 p&p per set will be available at £35 on the night provided
> payment is made by cash or cheque. Cheques to be made payable to BRE Ltd.
> Members and visitors should aim to arrive between 6 p.m. and 6.15 p.m. and
> park their cars in a perimeter car park. Normal refreshments (bread, pate,
> cheese and coffee) will be available in the main bar of Staff House before
> the meeting. At about 6.45 p.m. members should walk across to the Haworth
> Chemistry Building.
