Apologies for crossposting
I'm getting to realise that a lot of colleagues share my interest in
internet quality and/or consumer health info on the internet. So I'm passing
on some info in case relevant- apologies if already well known to you.
1. Medline indexing has its moments, but articles relevant to internet
quality are usually indexed so that you pick them up on PubMed if you search
with:
internet/standards[MeSH]
Note you need to use square brackets. This wont pick up recently published
things in Premedline, as they havent been indexed.
Links on the first page include one to interesting recent one (and
responses) by Smith in the BMJ (with free link to full text, of course-
thanks BMJ!) BMJ has a subject collection on the www at
http://bmj.com/cgi/collection/WWW
2. Two good books out this year, written by UK LIS profs very expert in this
area:
* Robert Kiley et al (Oct 2001)The patient's internet handbook. RSM press
(see www.patient-handbook.co.uk) (also cheap!)
* Sue Welsh et al (2001) Finding and using health and medical information on
the internet. Aslib publications (see
http://www.aslib.co.uk/pubs/2001/07/02.html)
3. Mailing lists:
*consumer-health-informatics may be relevant. See
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/consumer-health-informatics.html
*For UK people, there is Consumer Health Information Consortium
http://omni.ac.uk/CHIC/ (subscription needed) whose services include a
mailing list at http://www.mailbase.org.uk/lists/con-healthinc/
4. There are *3* publications with names like 'health (information) on the
internet'....! One I find very good is 'He@lth Information on the Internet'
see http://www.hioti.org/ (print and e versions). Unfortunately, there's no
longer free full-text on the internet for non-subscribers, tho you can
access older issues and a free recent sample issue.
5. Searching: I start with OMNI http://omni.ac.uk (UK) but there are also
other nationally funded gateways to quality-checked resources (with local
and usually international coverage) eg
Health on the Net http://www.hon.ch (Switzerland) (also has
Code for web sites)
Healthfinder http://healthfinder (USA)
HealthInsite http://www.healthinsite.gov.au (Australia)
Canadian Health Network http://www.canadian-health-network.ca/ (Canada)
If anyone else has good ideas (preferably free!) for keeping up to date in
this area, please let me and/or the list know? I wont be able to *answer*
any emails for a while, so thanks in advance.
