"Methodological Considerations in Caribbean Research - Roundtable
Discussion" CALL FOR PAPERS
The 26th Society for Caribbean Studies Conference to be held at Warwick
University, UK Monday 1st - Wednesday 3rd July, 2002
The society seeks one page abstracts, by JANUARY 10, 2002, for papers on
"Methodological Considerations in Caribbean Research"
The aim of this session is to generate a wide-ranging and informative
debate around a variety of methodological, theoretical and ethical
considerations in the performance, analysis and dissemination of research
on the Caribbean. Each contributor is asked to present a short 10-minute
paper before the discussion is opened up. Possible topics for discussion
might include:
· Disciplining Caribbean Research: What is 'Caribbean Studies'? Is and
should 'Caribbean Studies' be a multi-, inter- or post-disciplinary
project? Is the concept of 'Caribbean Studies' useful or meaningful at
all?
· Insiders/Outsiders: What are the theoretical and ethical issues
associated with researchers from outside the Caribbean working on the
region? What issues confront researchers of Caribbean origin when
researching in the region? What is the relationship between power and
positionality in Caribbean research? What are the issues associated with
where and how Caribbean research is disseminated? How can local voices be
present in Caribbean research?
· The General vs. the Particular: Is it possible to generalise about the
Caribbean? Are certain societies seen as typical or more important than
others? What are the consequences of this?
· Valuing Knowledge: How are different forms of knowledge and method
valued in Caribbean research?
· Evolution and Revolution: How is time and narrative conceptualised in
Caribbean research?
· Speech and Silence: How do particular theoretical paradigms shape what
can and cannot be said within research on the Caribbean?
Abstracts addressing any other topics beyond these are more than welcome.
We are particularly keen to receive abstracts from postgraduate students.
Bursaries are available for postgraduate presenters (UK and international)
and arts researchers/practitioners from the Caribbean.
