Dear Aiden
In response to your query about remotey accessing a digital answering
machine. Surely a simple device for dialling the code required to access the
messages. This can of cause be programmed in to one button on a standard
walkabout phone.
However, I have looked on the FAST database available online at
www.fastuk.org
There are two recent projects on the FAST website that have made it to
market. They maybe just what you are looking for. These systems can do far
more for the individual.
The first is a voice activated learning transmitter and designed by Rehabteq
Ltd tel 0118 927 23300 contact Mr Roger Southall There website is
www.rteq.co.uk
Description - The voice activated learning transmitter is a New simpler low
cost transmitter to allow environmental controls to be activated by existing
telephone or computer. No additional installation necessary.
The second is ICAN - Integrated Communication and Control for all needs It
is designed by Cambridge Adaptive Communication Ltd contact Mr David Mason
on 01296 716736 There website is http://www.cameleon-web.com/
Description ICAN focuses on developing and evaluating systems which enabled
disabled and elderly people to communicate and control their environment
from a portable device or wheelchair. ICAN will lay the foundation for
future standardisation in integrating wheelchair user interface devices with
smart homes and communication devices.
These two very innovate companies should be able to help you and supply a
wheelchair mounted transmitter to control your environment and your computer
including page turners.

Subject: Remotely operated telephone answering machines
>I wonder if anyone has any experience or knowledge of any systems which can
be used to remotely (by IR, RF or an adapted switch) access a digital
answering machine. I have a client who has Motor Neuron Disease and who
would like to be able to play back phone messages by pressing a single
switch.

>We have tried using a Gewa Prog and VoiceMail, but this proved too complex
for the client. Additionally, we are unable to switch adapt commercially
available devices as this would infringe CE legislation.
