In 1999 we started http://www.surrealism.co.uk an open space global online
art gallery for anyone wishing to display their art works
(visual/aural/verbal) on the web, professional and amateur alike
(intriguingly the first person to send an image was Pablo Weizz-Carrington,
son of Leonora Carrington).
We would very much like to take this project a step further, by setting up
a vast database that could hold literally millions of files at any one time
(upgraded by the participants themselves if so required), thus providing a
valuable resource/snapshot/archive of creative artistic endeavour worldwide.
The key to the success of this project is effective use of the internet and
the database itself, primarily in terms of archiving, storage, search, and
accessibility features. In brief, contemporary digital compression rates
now make a project of this scope, a viable proposition.
Surrealism.co.uk has always been run on a voluntary basis, but obviously a
project of this scope requires appropriate funding and partnerships.
If anyone has any advise or information that might help us in respect of
the above, please get in touch.
