Assistant Conservator-Archives and Special Collections
Non-fixed term, 18.5 hours per week, £17,551-£19,751 per annum, rising
on 1 march 2002 to £17,726-£19,949, pro-rata.
The Conservation Unit handles a wide range of materials,including
mediaeval and modern paper and parchment documents, manuscript and
printed volumes, maps, plans, architectural drawings, seals, photographs
and special media. It also has microfilming and photographic facilities
and responsibilities. It has a permanent establishment of one full-time
and one part-time conservator, and additional fixed-term staffing from
project funding.
The Assistant Conservator will share in the wide variety of work
undertaken in the unit. This includes challenging paper and parchment
repair, book conservation and repair of seals. The unit is also
regularly involved with preventive rehousing, environmental
monitoring and assistance with exhibition mounting.
The Assistant Conservator will work as part of a small team under the
direction of the Senior Conservator. Applicants should be qualified
conservators, with at least five years experience, preferably including
both paper repair and binding, and will be self-motivated and
enthusiastic, with the flexibility to adapt skills to a variety of work.
