To all who may be interested.
On Thursday 17th of January, I will be running a one-day training course on
the chemistry and structure of skin and parchment, for conservation staff
and interns. If anyone else would like to join us, we would be delighted.
The course will not cost anything, though if there is sufficient interest,
we will arrange for lunch to be provided on site, for which there would be
small charge.
The day course is a structured series of lectures on the subject
(originally developed for a client), with an opportunity to examine
parchment materials and to try out some treatment methods. The programme
will be as follows (precise times to be confirmed):
1. Coffee on arrival
2. Short Introduction to the day
3. Chemical and physical structure of skin collagen
4. Molecular and physical changes to skin collagen when made into
parchment and vellum
5. Conservation implications of the structure and changes, for parchment
membranes
5. Lunch
7. Historical and physical evidence in parchment manuscripts and their
conservation implications
8. Summary of conservation treatments past and present
9. Examination and tests, plus simple treatment methods practice
The course will run at:
Dorset Record Office
Bridport Road
Dorchester
Dorset DT1 1RP
If you would like to come along, please let me know by emailing me at
[log in to unmask]
If you would like to have a go at any treatment method in particular,
please let me know in advance. I can then structure the session to give
you time to do this.
Course notes, particularly for the chemistry, will be available if you
require them. Please let me know beforehand so that I can make sufficient
copies. A small charge will be made on the day for these copies.
I look forward to receiving any responses.
