Dear All,
This month's What's Brewing, (CAMRA's Newspaper) July 2001, p.24, has a
short article about the Whitebread Archive entitled 'Archive to be split
up'. This indicates that by the end of the year '...the largest organised
collection of historic brewing and pub records and artefacts in the country,
is to be split up and disposed of by the end of the year'. Most, apparently
is to be '...offered to regional museums and academic institutions'. Nothing
about Record Offices.
A company spokesman said 'In its current form the archive had become
unmanageable. It will be better managed elsewhere (?where) where people can
make use of it'.
'Some of the artefacts will be used to decorate new luxury apartments being
planned for the Chiswell Street site, and other material will be auctioned
off'. Archivist Nick Redman declined to comment.
This is all very distressing. Can Nick Redman comment to the Archives email
site so that we know the facts? Are county Record Offices to benefit from
the 'split up' and who are 'the people' who will 'make use of' the Archive?
I would like to be one of them.
