I would like to take this opportunity to clarify recent comments concerning
Resource's consultation paper on archives, which appear to have been taken
out of context in recent postings on the perceptions debate.
What our Consultation paper sought to identify were the perceptions of
archives and archivists that are shared by politicians, the public and
colleagues in other cultural-sector professions, as well as from within the
archive profession. What we are proposing are ways to challenge and change
these perceptions, by working in partnership with archives, and by
encouraging and developing cross-domain working. Archives are not alone in
facing these issues, which are shared by both the library and museum
professions.
Recent work, such as the NCA Taking Part survey of social inclusion work in
archives has identified much innovative work going on, but equally, the
survey identified some outdated and entrenched views, and areas where
further work and investment is required. This archives-nra discussion list
is seen by archivists worldwide, and museum and library colleagues. Surely
we need to be demonstrating and drawing attention to, the good work that
archivists are doing across the profession, sharing expertise and
experience, rather than discussions which can only reinforce stereotypical
images.
