Society of Archivists' Diploma Course
Thank you to Steve for this enquiry.
Unfortunately the Society's Council, acting on recommendations from the
Diploma Board and ETDC, has come to the very regrettablw but
unavoidable conclusion that the course is unable to continue. A full
explanation of the rationale for this decision should appear in the next
Society of Archivists' Newsletter, but basically the situation is as
follows:
a) there is increasing difficulty in finding volunteer tutors without
which the course cannot function.
b) the course needs substantial revision and if it is to be accredited
it needs to conform to modern educational practice. Distance learning
techniques have progressed and cannot reasonably be used withour
recourse to (costly) professional educators.
c) there are several opportunities opening up for taking distance
learning courses, including those in RM run by Northumberland and
Aberystwyth, and the proposed Aberystwyth archives course which was
advertised at Conference.
Since time has moved on and we need an accreditable course, simply
carrying on as at present was not felt to be an option.
The present students will all be fully supported up to the time of their
completion. Single Module Certificates will continue in the forseeable
future - it is the core professional skills modules of the Diploma which
are most time-expired and cannot continue. These were never available as
SMCs.

Subject: Society's Diploma Course
Dear all,
I have just read in the Film and Sound Group Newsletter No.15 that the
Society's Diploma Course is to be discontinued for new applicants,
though
there is no mention of this on the Society's website. Can anyone
confirm
whether this is indeed the case and if so is it to be replaced by any
other
distance learning professional qualification - run either by the Society
or
by any of the archive schools?
Many thanks
