The design and analysis of ECG studies: how to avoid a
storm in a QT cup

Abstract: In recent years, several drugs have been withdrawn from the
market because of sudden cardiac deaths, which are believed to be
triggered when the drug increases the QT interval, that part of the cardiac
cycle which includes repolarisation.
Consequently, investigation of drug effects on the QT interval has
become an important part of drug development during the pre-clinical and
early clinical phases. The interpretation of QT data is complicated by the
fact that it is dependent on the heart rate itself (modification of which
may be part of the desired action of the drug).
In this talk I will show how the use of common, but inappropriate
methods of analysis of QT data can lead to incorrect conclusions about how a
drug affects the QT interval, and propose a strategy for avoiding these
problems.
