Subject Centre Seminar
Teaching Linguistics to Students of Foreign Languages
Friday 7th December 2001 at Salford University, Manchester
The aim of the event is to address the central question of what Linguistics should be taught to students of Modern
Foreign Languages and why this particular selection. For example do we teach Linguistics in order to help students
understand the structure of the language they are learning; to explore language as communication; to enable them to
understand the process of language acquisition or do we teach it or for some other reason? We are also interested in
considering the way in which Linguistics is taught, e.g in a multidisciplinary way (i.e. in a Linguistics department
where there is no modern language teaching) or in an interdisciplinary way (e.g. in a department of Languages or Modern
Languages and Linguistics department).
This seminar will be of interest to anyone who is teaching Linguistics to students studying foreign languages as a major
part of their degree (this includes courses that comprise Linguistics as a named component, or as an optional/compulsory
module).
The seminar will consist of three keynote presentations outlining some of the issues involved in teaching Linguistics to
students within the context of a foreign language degree and four individual case studies outlining current practice in
this area. Time will be allocated for follow-up discussions after each case study.
