Dear All,
Once again this year we had major problems with completing the database. I
suppose it was better than last year but not much!! It is a huge job for us
our EXCEL speadsheet has over 10,000 lines. Fortunately this year I had a
placement student with very good technical skills to help me and he built up
a very good relationship with Alan Graham at the SLC. Mainly because they
were talking to each other so often!! Alan did admit there were still
software problems and sheets of our data were sent off to the software
company on a couple of occasions. To summarise:-
1. The data base we received contained a significant amount of data
which had been entered during the year by the SLC for courses for which we
already had valid entries. One example was an Education Cert which they had
added 4 additional entries with varying titles ect. All this data needed to
be checked.
2. There was difficulty in installing the software and it took a number
of calls to the SLC until we received the correct information.
3. Date acceptance problems
4. Problems with franchise and multi-site provision which took many
phonecalls and some rather interesting suggestions on how to make the data
validate.
We are just about to send the data back so I have got everything crossed
that it is OK. My only hope is that they actually get back to us if there
are any problems as last year it sat up in Glasgow for 6 weeks without them
contacting us about some data errors. It was only when my local LEA
contacted us to ask why hadn't we sent the database back that I found out
there was a problem.
